Mandatory Overtime Ban Goes Into Effect July 1st

On Wednesday, July 1st, the ban on mandatory overtime for health care workers in Pennsylvania goes into effect.

Forcing nurses and other direct care workers to work overtime puts patients in danger.

"When we are forced to work long hours, the risk of a costly mistake rises dramatically.  Starting July 1st, our patients can rest easy knowing they have a rested nurse safely providing their care," said Sue Dougherty, a Registered Nurse at Norristown State Hospital.

This law is the result of seven years of hard work by SEIU caregivers across the state, and will dramatically improve care for patients in our health care facilities.

Since the Governor signed the ban into law last fall, the Nurse Alliance of Pennsylvania and SEIU members have been educating other health care workers and employers about the details of the law.

"The State's Department of Labor and Industry reached out to us for input when they created their guidelines for enforcing this ban," said Deb Bonn, the director of the Nurse Alliance of Pennsylvania. "Now it’s up to hospitals, nursing homes, and other health care facilities to begin adhering to the new law."
